Civilizing Myself

Let’s face it. In our country, visiting museums is not part of our culture. We don’t bother to go, unless you’re a student and your teacher or professor required you to visit a certain museum in a certain place.

I may be wrong, but most people think that museums are meant solely for the well-off members of the society, an activity only the rich people can afford and enjoy. That is a HUGE misconception. If you can afford buying tokens for a videoke machine (don’t shoot me, I have nothing against karaoke singing. I’m Pinoy, so I like it, too), you definitely can afford museum entrance fees. Some of them do not even charge a dime!

You see, museums are there for you — for you to learn more about your community, your country, a religion, a new technology, history, etc. Spending time in a museum somehow changes, in a positive way, your view of yourself as part the society. Sometimes you can find the missing aspects of your life. It can be fun, only when you start appreciating what you see there. You can even say, museums rock!

It had been a little while since I’ve been to one. This year I plan to visit as many as I can (that’s the GRAND plan!). And since I’m based in Metro Manila, I’ll start here. I’ve made a list of the museums here and grouped them by locality.  You might want to visit them also. Or join me!

This is sort of my birthday gift for myself also. I thought that a little culture/art appreciation won’t hurt.

Hey, if I missed something on the list, feel free to add it up in the comments section. Also, I’m going to post details of my visits to these museums.

  2. Antonette says:

Tama yan mare, we should take time out to enrich ourselves with stuff only available in museums. You might also want to visit the Food and Art Galerie at the GT Tower in Ayala:) It teems with different forms of artwork such as paintings and sculptures that your eyes can feast on. I would frequent the place when I was still working at the bulletin and I noticed there are always new art pieces on the walls every time I come back. Laging may bago sa lugar nila mare:)

    Antonette’s last blog post…Yesterday, Today and…your turn

Salve: Thanks for mentioning that place, mare. Will be adding that in my list. :D

Very nice post Salve! Yay, it’s something na hindi kita makukulit dito!

One reason perhaps why our lack of interest is the absence of local literatures explaining our own works of art or even to advertise the existence of the museums you mentioned above.

Another reason is wrong mentality among Filipino youngsters. They think that going to a museum is “jolog” [if I get the right interpretation of the word according to my Buddy]. I believe that museums and theatres are the best place to date a girl/boyfriend –that is, if you don’t mind admiring and (or) ‘staring’ at inanimate objects instead of the face of the person you are holding hands with! :-)

You may also reason out that you cannot readily interpret a work of art if you happen na hindi mo kaagad nasagot ang tanong ng pagmamahal ng kasama mo. It’s also a nice place to measure the depth of someone’s fond du coeur and size of the brain. Believe me, its proven effective! :-)

if only there will be groups to promote our museums. sayang. kaya di rin gaanong napapaganda kasi kulang sa suporta.

  4. Len says:

I think some Filipinos also find going to the museums as boring.

I’m interested in those.

Salve: true yan len. i hate it when i hear teenagers (students na nagpi-field trip) laughing, as if it’s funny to be caught in a place like the museum.

  5. Len says:

And I want to civilize myself, too. haha

    Salve: of course! let’s go museum-hopping, leng-leng!

  6. Aling Peppay says:

Yeah museums are really great, sayang lang di uso yan dito sa UAE. Kung meron man, for sure its not something that will interest me. I do visit museums in the Philippines din. Hoepfully when I come back I could get to see one again.

Salve: Glad to meet someone who appreciates these places! :D

  7. kengkay says:

masarap sa museo pambata! dito ang mga kids exposed na rin sa mga museums kasi karamihan ng museums dito e yung tipong you could touch and work around with, di katulad dyan sa atin na tingin tingin lang :)

kengkay’s last blog post…biyahera sa bangkok

  11. i was reading throught a few of the posts and i also identify these to be plumb interesting. abject my english seriously isn’t exaclty the top. would there be anyway to transalte this into my argot, spanish. it would really help us a lot. since i could be over a par together with the english terminology for the language.

  12. I’m really enjoying the theme/design of your web site. Do you ever run into any web browser compatibility problems? A number of my blog audience have complained about my blog not working correctly in Explorer but looks great in Firefox. Do you have any recommendations to help fix this issue?

  13. abcoaster says:

Admiring the persistence you put into your site and in depth information you present. It’s good to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same unwanted rehashed information. Fantastic read! I’ve bookmarked your site and I’m including your RSS feeds to my Google account.

  14. Have you ever thought about writing an e-book or guest authoring on other blogs? I have a blog based upon on the same ideas you discuss and would love to have you share some stories/information. I know my visitors would appreciate your work. If you’re even remotely interested, feel free to send me an email.

Howdy! Someone in my Myspace group shared this site with us so I came to look it over. I’m definitely enjoying the information. I’m book-marking and will be tweeting this to my followers! Excellent blog and wonderful style and design.

  16. Howdy! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering if you knew where I could get a captcha plugin for my comment form? I’m using the same blog platform as yours and I’m having problems finding one? Thanks a lot!

  17. Good day! I know this is kinda off topic but I’d figured I’d ask. Would you be interested in trading links or maybe guest writing a blog post or vice-versa? My blog discusses a lot of the same topics as yours and I believe we could greatly benefit from each other. If you are interested feel free to shoot me an e-mail. I look forward to hearing from you! Awesome blog by the way!

  18. Today, I went to the beachfront with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!

  19. buy traffic says:

Thanks, I have recently been hunting for information about this subject matter for ages and yours is the best I’ve found so far.

  20. Awsome…

I saw this really great post today….

  21. Hi there just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The words in your post seem to be running off the screen in Opera. I’m not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I thought I’d post to let you know. The design look great though! Hope you get the problem resolved soon. Kudos

  22. Please let me know if you’re looking for a writer for your blog. You have some really great articles and I believe I would be a good asset. If you ever want to take some of the load off, I’d absolutely love to write some content for your blog in exchange for a link back to mine. Please blast me an e-mail if interested. Thanks!

  23. I think one of your adverts caused my internet browser to resize, you might want to put that on your blacklist.

  24. Hi there! This is my first comment here so I just wanted to give a quick shout out and tell you I genuinely enjoy reading through your articles. Can you suggest any other blogs/websites/forums that go over the same topics? Thanks for your time!

Hello there! This is my first visit to your blog! We are a collection of volunteers and starting a new initiative in a community in the same niche. Your blog provided us beneficial information to work on. You have done a wonderful job!

  26. Hmm it looks like your blog ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I had written and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog. I too am an aspiring blog writer but I’m still new to everything. Do you have any helpful hints for rookie blog writers? I’d genuinely appreciate it.

  27. Good post. I’m a regular visitor of your blog and appreciate you taking the time to maintain the nice site. I’ll be a regular visitor for a really long time.

Right now it appears like Expression Engine is the preferred blogging platform available right now. (from what I’ve read) Is that what you are using on your blog?

Hi there! This is my 1st comment here so I just wanted to give a quick shout out and say I truly enjoy reading through your posts. Can you suggest any other blogs/websites/forums that cover the same subjects? Many thanks!

  31. Almost all of whatever you claim happens to be astonishingly accurate and that makes me wonder the reason why I had not looked at this in this light previously. Your article truly did switch the light on for me personally as far as this particular issue goes. However there is one particular point I am not too comfortable with so whilst I make an effort to reconcile that with the main idea of your position, let me see what all the rest of your readers have to point out.Nicely done.

  32. Wonderful blog you have here but I was curious about if you knew of any forums that cover the same topics discussed here? I’d really love to be a part of community where I can get feed-back from other knowledgeable individuals that share the same interest. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Many thanks!

  33. I’m not sure exactly why but this web site is loading extremely slow for me. Is anyone else having this issue or is it a issue on my end? I’ll check back later and see if the problem still exists.

  34. In this great scheme of things you receive an A+ with regard to hard work. Where you actually confused everybody was on the facts. You know, people say, details make or break the argument.. And that could not be much more accurate in this article. Having said that, permit me say to you just what did do the job. Your writing is actually highly persuasive and this is most likely why I am taking the effort to comment. I do not make it a regular habit of doing that. Next, despite the fact that I can easily see a leaps in reason you make, I am not really convinced of how you seem to connect your details that help to make your final result. For the moment I shall subscribe to your point however trust in the near future you link the facts better.

  35. Great write-up. I am a normal visitor of your web site and appreciate you taking the time to maintain the excellent site. I’ll be a regular visitor for a long time.

  36. Thanx for a very interesting blog. What else may I get that kind of info written in such a perfect manner? I have a undertaking that I am simply now operating on, and I’ve been at the look out for such info.

  37. That is the type of info that should be shared around the web. Shame on the search engines for now not positioning this higher up! Come on over and discuss with my web site. Thanks =)

  38. I appreciate your wp template, wherever did you download it from?

  39. Music started playing when I opened up this web site, so irritating!

  40. I was wondering if you ever considered changing the page layout of your website? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or two pictures. Maybe you could space it out better?

  41. I have not checked in here for some time since I thought it was getting boring, but the last few posts are really great quality so I guess I’ll add you back to my daily bloglist. You deserve it my friend. :)

  42. ipad3 says:

An fascinating concept this. I’m 1 of those men and women whom tend to wait for things to mature prior to taking action but in this case I’m mindful that inaction leads to only failures so I will heed your comments and begin to do anything about it.

  43. I’m really loving the theme/design of your blog. Do you ever run into any internet browser compatibility issues? A few of my blog visitors have complained about my website not working correctly in Explorer but looks great in Safari. Do you have any tips to help fix this problem?
